Writing for magazines is not just good for your wallet-it’s great for your resume, especially if you are trying to sell a book-length work. Literary agents and book editors look for a writer’s experience, and there’s nothing like a list of published stories to communicate ability. Students in this course will learn break-in tactics as well as strategies for maintaining a career as a freelance magazine writer.
Lessons will focus on developing salable ideas, crafting pitch letters, finding writing markets, getting the stories right, copy dos’s and don’ts, self-editing, building relationships with editors and other aspects of the world of magazines. Students will complete assignments weekly, which will be critiqued in class.
