Unsilent Generation

“Information and commentary for pissed-off progressive old folks (and future old folks). . . because we’re not dead yet.”

Veteran author and investigative journalist James Ridgeway, 72, writes about the reality of being a senior in the 21st century. I have a particular appreciation for older people not only because my grandmother was the matriarch of my HUGE Puerto Rican family, but because I worked for a year as an AmeriCorps*VISTA on behalf of low-income seniors in the Denver Metropolitan area (where another newspaper – The Rocky Mountain News, which published my press releases about The Foster Grandparent Program – has bitten the dust!).

I also know that someday I will be wrinkly and WISE, so I have been doing my best to learn as much as possible from my elders now, and respect their POV. What I know for sure is that it isn’t easy being old. Health insurance. Retirement nest eggs. Empty nests. Potential loneliness if you don’t have kids. Watching too much TV to the point that this digital switch is akin to violating an individual’s civil rights (I don’t think my generation is going to be watching much of it in 2025!). And there’s always those seniors who freeze to death or bake to death during the extremes of the seasons.

Ridgeway’s blog – endorsed by the prestigious Mother Jones, a 30-something-year-old magazine that WILL survive this media cancer wave – is important for readers of all ages.
