March 20: Writing Workshop at Borders in Merrick Park

by Angelo Pizarro

It was a relaxing and very enjoyable first workshop in the café at Borders Bookstore on March 6.  Some members who read their work to the group were:

  • Andrea Wonsch, who read parts of a wonderful children’s story she’s working on;
  • Jim Stafford shared a spellbinding and dark tale of horror;
  • Naylet Leon shared a beautiful, sensitive and very personal piece of poetry with the group;
  • Michelle Iberg read an enthralling narrative—typical of her brilliant prose style; working on his second book, “The China Incident”,
  • Jeff Benjamin read the opening pages to his latest piece- based on the fascinating present-day true story of politics and how close the U.S. came to armed conflict with China not too long ago;

As for me, I read a raw non-fiction piece based on my time as a soldier in the US Army.  All members gave specific, very constructive feedback to the work shared.  The gathering of such diverse artists is a wonderful way to encourage writers to aspire to greater self-improvement, to foster innovative and provocative creativity.

We are looking forward to doing this at least twice every month, so that we can help make Miami’s community of writers a literary bright spot of artistic quality.
