Remembering Columbine

By Curtis Esquibel

DENVER – Every once in a while a 10 year anniversary date pops into the synapses of my brain. The writer in me remembers everything — specific conversations, clothes people wore, “detailia” that shouldn’t be recalled. But somehow I do.

April 20, 1999 is somewhat one of those days — but not so hard to recall because of the magnitude: the Columbine shootings. I honestly have had nightmares about covering Columbine and still remember the interviews I had where I spoke to kin of those who died. It was a horrible experience. I remember the April blizzard and a bomb threat being made and my editor at the Post telling me to go out there and wait for a bomb to explode.
